and Restoring Balance and Vitality
Feeling and Generating Chi: A Deeper Exploration of Tai Chi Qigong
Recently, over the past several weeks, we’ve explored the physical benefits of Chi. But what does Chi actually feel like? And how can we generate it?
For example, one simple way to experience the lifeforce energy is through friction. Rub your palms together briskly and then slowly pull them apart. As warmth builds in your hands, you may notice a tingling sensation. You may also feel a subtle resistance between your palms. This is Waidan Chi, a form of superficial vitality circulating just beneath the skin.
However, to generate a deeper energetic sensation, we turn to Vibrating Hands Qigong. In this practice, rhythmic shaking activates vitality at an intrinsic level. If you’re curious, I’ve shared a free 19-page course and accompanying video on Vibrating Palms Qigong. Together, they offer foundational training in this transformative practice.
Ultimately, understanding how to feel the lifeforce energy is just the beginning. The next step is learning how different Qigong approaches cultivate and refine this energy. These practices support healing, vitality, and deeper self‑cultivation.
The Three Main Approaches to Qigong

Realistically, qigong encompasses thousands of unique forms. Yet its philosophy generally falls into three main approaches.
1. Medical Qigong – The Contemporary Science of Healing
Traditionally, Medical Qigong was developed for healing and therapeutic purposes. Practitioners often use it under the guidance of trained experts. These experts direct vitality to address specific health conditions. Moreover, it is a structured discipline. Practitioners frequently teach it in clinical settings. What’s more, it integrates modern medical knowledge with traditional energy principles.
Key aspects of Medical Qigong include:
- Diagnosis and treatment protocols tailored to individual health concerns
- Prescriptive exercises designed to target specific ailments
- A focus on particular meridians or organs, depending on the patient’s condition
- The use of scientific terminology to bridge ancient wisdom with contemporary medicine
Consequently, this approach is more specialized and treatment‑oriented. It guides practitioners to restore and regulate energy in precise ways. These methods support measurable health benefits.
2. Traditional Qigong – The Holistic and Martial Approach to Chi Cultivation
Conversely, Traditional Qigong is broader in scope, emphasizing overall well-being, longevity, and spiritual development. Unlike Medical Qigong, it is less prescriptive and serves as a daily self-cultivation discipline, frequently integrated with Taoist, Buddhist, or Confucian philosophical principles.
Historical roots of Traditional Qigong include:
- Spiritual awareness—guiding practitioners to refine their energy for personal and cosmic harmony
- Meditation and breathwork—balancing the body’s energy system as a whole rather than treating isolated conditions
- Martial arts applications—traditionally taught within Kung Fu and Tai Chi schools, strengthening internal energy for combat effectiveness
Traditional Qigong was historically used to generate Chi energy for martial arts. However, this website focuses on health and wellness. It helps practitioners cultivate energy for longevity, vitality, and inner balance.
3. Vibrating Palms Qigong – Bridging Traditional and Medical Qigong
At the same time, Vibrating Palms Qigong falls within Traditional Qigong. Yet at the same time, it also bridges elements of Medical Qigong. Unlike classical forms, Vibrating Palms Qigong allows practitioners to generate Chi more quickly. This makes it therefore more easily accessible to beginners. Nevertheless, it still retains holistic principles.
How Vibrating Palms Qigong fits within both categories:
- Some forms of Vibrating Palms Qigong are designed to address specific medical conditions, much like Medical Qigong
- It remains Traditional Qigong because it is holistic in nature, treating multiple aspects of health at once
- Unlike Medical Qigong, it does not have diagnostic components, but it still delivers therapeutic benefits
Overall, this modern interpretation makes Vibrating Palms Qigong an effective entry point. It helps beginners experience rapid Chi activation. This qigong also offers healing properties without requiring clinical supervision.
And it activates Chi faster than classical forms. However, it does not cultivate energy as deeply. This means it carries both advantages and limitations—a perfect stepping stone for beginners while serving as a gateway to deeper energy cultivation.
